Challenges on Perfection– Chang,Chia-Heng

Human beings always try to record and represent everything they know in the way that can be preserved.  In the beginning, the caveman uses drawings on the wall of the cave to show infomations.  Ever since then, human had succeeded and develop on the subject of drawings which eventually became one bransh of art.  Recently, the technology advances and databases are developed.  Now the infomations were stored in databases for the concern of the space consumption and it has replaced the old form of art.  However, despite the way of development, both art and sciences seeks to “perfect” the infomations contained.  For example, art pursue the 3-D way to increase the realisticness of the topics and mathematicians uses more complex maths and equations to represent a 3-D space, which also pursues perfection.  And nowadays, artists apply the concept of geometry in maths to leap a step towards perfection.

Before 1400 A.D., Al-Haytham gave explanation to visions.   However, the paintings around that time is still 2-D.  Around 1413 A.D., an artist called Duccio had his first attempt to make 2-D painting into 3-D.  Later, an artist called Brunellesihi developed the correct perspective on linear formulation.  This is a huge break through because by applying this formula onto painting, it can create a sense of dimensionality to the viewers.  This involve a technique of “vanishing point”, basing on the fact that futher object seems smaller to observers, artists generally paint far away object smaller the the close by object.

As the art techniques progresses, more and more art works combine their work with mathematic principles to make art pieces seem to be a reality.  The Golden Ratio developed by Archimedes  was often incorporated into artworks.  The significance about the golden ratio is that most people argee upon the fact that it represent the ratio of nature.  Only through this ratio, it will bring the most beautiful and balanced pieces of works.  Even human bodies were being applied to this ratio to explain our difference of appearance and gender.

The technique of art works seems to reach its apex by now.  There’s nothing more we can do to improve it further more.  Even human were represent in 3-D spaces only.  There should be nothing more complex about it anymore.  However, this hope was thrusted away in the 20th century.

In the 20th centry, a famous physicist called Einstein propose the famous Theory of Relativity.  The theory turn down the old idea about seperate time and space in Newtonian Physics.  So, instead of a fourth dimension of time, Einstein suggested that space and time are inter-connnected and twisted.  Time is no longer an seperate issue.  It was, in fact, a definition of the quantity which light travels in a certain distance (t=c/d).  It basically means time depend on the distance in which travelled by light.  In the artistic speaking, there is no way to pursue a futher improvement on the art works.  A piece of work in 3-D is automatically in the space-time plane.  So there is no other way to show time specifically from an art work but time is already included in the work which human beings can never tell them apart.

Although Relativity theory kind of limit the expansion of art work, it does not stop the artists from more creations.  With the aid of technologes now, artists were able to pursue virtual art works.  This can break the limitation of reality.  The reality is govern by certain rules, but human imagination is unbounded.New view at gravity
