Memory and conciousness… Coincidence or Truth?

Our memory always serves as the major source that we rely upon.  In computer language, the memory is a data base (duh…).   The formally recorded memory of a group can then be generalized as history that we learn from.  We have a tendency to keep track of everything that we have done in order for future application or developments.  For example, the collective memories and dream stories eventually develop into a branch of study called psychology.  C.G. Jung proposed a research on dreams and all these random stuff to study our human behavior with links of modern life.  All these knowledge than accumulate into a specific field called Noosphere.  All these studies just show that how we valued our knowledge.  Indeed, it was the most valuable resource that we can have because we use these applications to make our life better.

One example is the art development throughout the ages.  Most of the art innovations came from the environment that the artist was in.  Dadaism is one of the significant examples.  The paintings were severely distorted with time to reflect the tragedy and lack of confidence during WWI.  It is still evolving continuously and even to the degree of making art base on robots or micro-organisms.

On the other hand, we use our application to explore the area that we were isolated from before.  Exploration of universe is the most solid example.  Back in 17th century, only physicists like Newton and Kepler propose some physics calculations that can be used in space exploration.  It is not until the 20th century where human being finally launched the first space satellite, Sputnik I.  Again, we store this experience into “databases” and improve them later on.  Now, all the broadcastings are done through satellite transmissions and we are still attempt to make space travel possible for all kinds of people.

This is how we always work our way up throughout the history.  We always make one small step further than before and accumulate them to create the final results.  We are also affected by the environment to make our adjustments and it is always the spark for us to improve and discover about new stuff.  Unfortunately, this is also where the controversies arise.

Today in class, we had a huge debate about the relationship within the nature.  The question is that is everything a coincidence?  Can everything happen in this world be explained and in what way can it be explained?  Many people explained in many convincing views.  Some state that there is no simple pattern that we can see through.  Some propose that we can control everything.  I say all of them were very good arguments and I’ll take my stand from below.

No matter what kind of opinion do each people hold; the topic originated from Columbia incidence and the fall of World Trade Center.  All of us are familiar with world history.  First, there is WWI, then WWII, and eventually the Cold War.  In about a decade, the problem of Middle East burst out and still affects us everyday and everyone.  The prices are inflated all throughout out the world and the scale of chaos in the world is increase in its size, time, and tension.  The only conclusion is that the world is not getting better but the opposite.

So far, no one can explain about this trend.  No matter how much times do you take derivative about the world (if that equation exists), we still can not solve it.  There is, however, one book that clearly described this pattern completely.  This book was completed in about two thousand years ago and yes, this book is the Bible.  In the last book, the Revelation, it clearly described the pattern of the world that is going to be happening.  From Revelation 6:1-6:8, it clearly describes the chaos that is going to happen.

“And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see. (6:1) And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. (6:2) And when he had opened the second seal, I heard the second beast say, Come and see. (6:3) And there went out another horse that was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword. (6:4) And when he had opened the third seal, I heard the third beast say, Come and see. And I beheld, and lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand. (6:5) And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. (6:6) And when he had opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth beast say, Come and see. (6:7) And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. (6:8).”

If we say it is coincidence, then it fit too perfectly into our modern society.  What we heard everyday is death, famine, and war.  If it is not a coincidence, then, I must say that the Bible contain the absolute truth about our life. In the first chapter, it is the beginning of everything.  It is the beginning of both life and death.  Then we can see that the whole book use typology to tell us about the Gospel.  Then in the very end, the Revelation, it is the conclusion of everything.  We all agree that there must be a beginning and an end to our life in the world.  In that sense, doesn’t the Bible depict precisely how should our life be?  To be a reminder, this book was written thousands of years before and completed about two thousands years ago and yet, it still remains and passing on today.
